Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
A specialized, gold-standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder that gradually breaks the cycle between obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
Exposure & Response Prevention is a specialized form of CBT and the internationally recognized gold-standard treatment for OCD, endorsed in clinical guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association, NICE, and the International OCD Foundation.
ERP works by gradually and deliberately confronting the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger obsessive anxiety — while resisting the urge to perform the compulsion that usually follows. Through repeated, structured practice, the anxiety that once felt unbearable naturally loses its grip, and the cycle between obsession and compulsion weakens.
What to expect
Building a detailed hierarchy of triggers, ranked from mildly to significantly distressing
Starting with manageable exposures and working upward at a pace that’s challenging but not overwhelming
Practicing response prevention — resisting the compulsive behavior — with support throughout
Between-session practice to reinforce progress in real-world settings
Who this is for
- OCD diagnoses
- Intrusive thoughts and compulsions
- Ritualistic or avoidance behaviors
Research shows a majority of people who complete ERP experience a significant reduction in OCD symptoms, often within 8 to 16 weeks of consistent practice, making it the most effective single treatment approach studied for OCD to date.
